Hi, my name is Will and I’m word nerd. Always have been. My (unofficial) new year’s resolution (that I will undoubtedly break) is to expand my vocab – without inventing a cascade of nonsensical new words like batka or jooglebeel.
So, here’s the first wave. I promise that none of these are made up…
lollapalooza – an extraordinary or unusual thing, person, or event; an exceptional example or instance.
pulchritudinous – physically beautiful; comely.
Sardanapalian – excessively luxurious or sensual.
bosh – absurd or foolish talk; nonsense.
fantast – a visionary or dreamer
barnburner – something that is highly exciting, impressive, etc.
brisance – the shattering effect of a high explosive.
gasser – something that is extraordinarily pleasing or successful, especially a very funny joke
saccharine – exaggeratedly sweet or sentimental
veritable – very much so
defenestrate – to throw (a person or thing) out of a window.
convivial – friendly; agreeable
cynosure – something that strongly attracts attention by its brilliance, interest, etc.
felicity – the state of being happy, especially in a high degree; bliss
eloquence – the practice or art of using language with fluency and aptness.
Viola! Some interesting new words for your mind box. Only a jooglebeel wouldn’t want that.
